Recovery from Illness and Caregiver TLCThe role of friends and family in recovery can be important, even crucial, to a fast and excellent recovery. If family members are distant for whatever reason, turning to friends is a good option. The benefits may include help with daily chores, personal needs and moral support. Comfort, love and peace of mind do wonders in the recovery stage. This is especially true in the beginning stages of healing. I was recently in the grocery store where I overheard the woman in front of me tell the clerk that she was stocking up and preparing to drive herself to and from a chemotherapy session. I thought that it was so sad that this woman did not have any support to help her with this serious and scary medical process. It is important to ask for help when you need it. Planning ahead and asking for help is important self-care. On the other hand, caregiver self-care is also ultra important. The role of caregiver for a loved one can be difficult because it is an added stress. And there may be extra duties that go along with your existing commitments. Even though time for self-nurturing may be less, finding time to nurture yourself makes you a better caregiver and a happier, healthier person. Your needs are very important too, so try not to neglect yourself in the mix! Women especially need to give themselves TLC because they often have more to juggle. This keeps you stronger. (This is so true, especially if you have work and a family.) In this way, “self-ish” is never vain. It is about taking care of self. When you take care of yourself, you are better able to take care of others. So self-care is never selfish! No matter which role you are in – that of the person needing care – or the caregiver; be gentle! Nurturing and being nurtured back to health is a process. Give yourself and this process the necessary time and attention needed. 3.
