Healing Through Natural Herbs

Why Dance in the Garden of Healing Herbs?

Holistic healing through natural herbs can be safer and gentler on your system than some prescription drugs. People who turn to herbal remedies may also be trying to avoid the side-effects that prescription drugs may bring. They are also looking for solutions that are in-tune with the natural wisdom of their bodies.

Herbs for healing may also be explored if traditional medical methods have not worked.

Let’s take a tour of some of the ways healing herbs may help you to flourish…

Herb Benefits and Uses to Help You Bloom!

Holistic Healing - Healing Through Natural Herbs: Lavender and Basil Herbs
  • Massage: aaaah the relaxation of being touched in a healing, nurturing way. Smells of lavender, orange oil or a personal combo can be deeply healing and relaxing. Ask your massage therapist about what natural healing herbs can be healing for you. Or experiment and trade this magic with a friend.
  • Hydrotherapy in a spa, or the good ol’ hot bath with a new twist of steeped herbal “bath tea” for the water; or drops of essential oil, can go a long way for rejuvenation, relaxation and deep healing peace. This is healing through natural herbs at its funnest!

  • Aromatherapy in general is a huge, growing field that offers the promise of enchantment and healing. Spicy herbs can be invigorating, floral scents can be relaxing. All hold healing mysteries and lead you to unseen lands. When healing with herbs, use only the best, purest forms of essential oil. (And healing essential oils should never be consumed internally!!)
  • Teas, decoctions, tinctures, capsules, powders and poultices!

Let’s spend some time here; these terms may be new…

Herbology 101: The Earth’s Wellness Garden

Holistic Healing - Healing Through Natural Herbs: Close up of Lavender Teas: Herbal Tea Remedies or “infusions,” as they are called, can be a very pleasant way to take herbal preparations. They are best prepared fresh and steeped for 10-15 minutes. Buy the freshest you can get from a quality supplier or consider growing your own.

Decoctions: Are very much like teas, except the roots, seeds or berries of herbs are boiled to release their magic. They are simmered for approximately 10-20 minutes to release the healing properties of the plant. (Just a small amount of the plant is needed to get healing herb therapy.)

Tinctures: Some of the most potent herbal healing remedies are tinctures – or extracts. For example, real vanilla is an “extract.” Herbal tinctures usually have a base of alcohol. They have a long shelf life that usually spans months. They are also really effective because they can be absorbed by the body quickly. But they can taste horrible!

Special Note: If you are concerned about the alcohol in the tincture, put the recommended dose in a tea cup. Add 1 ounce of hot water, swirl for 30 seconds and the alcohol will evaporate.

Capsules: Herbs in supplements for healing are a really popular and easy way of taking herbs for medicinal purposes. If they are manufactured the right way they can be a powerful way of getting the herb you need. See the guidelines in Herbs for Healing for choosing capsules.

Powders: Can be sprinkled on food for example, but buyers should be aware that many powders are not standardized. That means you may not know about the quality or effectiveness of the ingredients.

Poultices: No, these interesting “body concoctions” have nothing to do with poultry or chicken! ;) These non-edible home remedy herbs are made into a paste-like substance and slathered on the area in need. They remind me of the old mustard on the chest trick of days gone by. Maybe there is something to that after all! ...With poultice preparations, it is recommended that you put a cheese cloth against your skin first, so none of the hot or spicy preparations aggravate your skin.

The Earth’s wellness garden is full of healthful solutions. Healing through natural herbs helps you to cultivate your own healing oasis. May it be a garden of beauty, majesty and healing wonder.
